I. Types of Micrometers Classified by Measuring Object

The outside micrometer is a fundamental measuring tool with wide application, primarily used for measuring the external dimensions of workpieces. Standard outside micrometers typically have measurement ranges such as 0–25 mm and 25–50 mm, with a measurement accuracy of up to 0.01 mm. Its structure includes a fixed anvil, a movable spindle, a main scale, and a vernier scale, enabling precise measurements through a screw drive mechanism. In mechanical processing, outside micrometers are widely used to measure the outer diameters of shafts and pipes, as well as the thickness of plates.

Internal micrometers are specifically designed for measuring internal dimensions such as hole diameters and slot widths. Unlike external micrometers, internal micrometers feature an adjustable measuring head structure, with measurement ranges typically ranging from 5 millimeters to several hundred millimeters. High-precision internal micrometers have a scale division of 0.01 millimeters, while some models achieve a resolution of 0.005 millimeters. Internal micrometers are essential measuring tools in the inspection of engine blocks, bearing bores, and precision molds.

A depth micrometer is used to measure the depth dimensions of workpieces, such as hole depth, groove depth, and step height. Its structural feature includes a replaceable measuring rod, allowing the measurement range to extend from 0–25 mm up to 0–300 mm. The base of the depth micrometer is designed in an L-shape or T-shape to ensure stability and accuracy during measurement. In mold manufacturing and precision machining, depth micrometers are used to verify whether the machining depth meets design specifications.

II. Types of Micrometers Classified by Structural Form

The mechanical micrometer is a traditional measuring tool that operates based on precise screw pairs and a scale reading system. The standard mechanical micrometer has a pitch of 0.5 millimeters, with the main scale having a spacing of 1 millimeter, and the auxiliary scale is divided into 50 equal parts, achieving a measurement accuracy of 0.01 millimeters. It has functions of data recording, statistical analysis, and interface transmission, and can be used in conjunction with measurement software. The lever micrometer utilizes the principle of lever amplification to magnify and display minute size changes through a mechanical lever system. The measurement accuracy of the lever micrometer can reach 0.002 millimeters, and the measuring force is constant, avoiding measurement errors caused by uneven force application by the operator. This type of micrometer is particularly suitable for measuring thin-walled parts and easily deformed workpieces, and is widely used in the aerospace and precision instrument manufacturing fields.

III. Analysis of Technical Characteristics of Special Micrometers

Thread micrometer is specifically designed for measuring the pitch diameter of threads and is a specialized tool for thread accuracy inspection. The thread micrometer is equipped with measuring heads of different pitches, capable of measuring the pitch range of 0.4 - 7.0 millimeters for metric threads. During measurement, the corresponding measuring head should be selected based on the pitch of the measured thread to ensure that the measurement point is located at the pitch diameter position. The tube micrometer is designed for measuring the thickness of pipe materials, container walls and other special situations. Its structural feature is that it has a spherical or planar measuring head. The measurement range is usually 0 - 25 millimeters, and the accuracy reaches 0.01 millimeters. The measuring head of the wall thickness micrometer can be inserted into narrow spaces and is suitable for measuring difficult-to-reach areas. In the fields of petrochemicals, boiler manufacturing and pipeline inspection, the wall thickness micrometer is used to monitor the safety status of equipment.

The gear micrometer is a specialized measuring tool used in gear manufacturing to measure parameters such as the tooth thickness and chord tooth thickness of gears. The gear micrometer is equipped with an adjustable measuring head, which can meet the measurement requirements for gears of different moduli. During the measurement process, the position and angle of the measuring head need to be set according to the gear's modulus and number of teeth. In the manufacturing of automotive gearboxes, reducers, and precision transmission devices, the gear micrometer ensures that the geometric accuracy of gears meets the design requirements.
